Internet Sources
Tips for selecting sources online:
- Use unique, specific terms. Don't just type Greek philosophers
- Use the minus sign (-) to narrow your search terms. With hundreds of new websites created everyday, terms with multiple meanings return a lot of unwanted results. For instance, if you were looking up information about the animal the jaguar your search terms could look like this: jaguar -car -automobile
- Use quotation marks for exact phrases.
- Do NOT only click on the first result you see on the search screen. Check the first one, and if it does not have what you need then continue on to the next source given.
- Do NOT believe that a website has accurate or reliable information because it was found by Google.
Evaluate your sources
It is YOUR responsibility to determine whether or not your sources are CREDIBLE.
Ask yourself these questions:
What makes a book credible?
What makes a database credible?
What makes a website credible?
You want to make sure you're looking at the A-B-C-D's of website evaluation.
A - Authority - Who wrote it? Are they qualified?
B - Bias - Is there a bias? Is this an opinion? What is the purpose?
C - Currency - When was the site last updated? How accurate/up-to-date is the information?
D - Documentation - Where is the site getting its information? Do they cite their sources?
